Devil's Playground is a 6 x 1 hour mini series. The year is 1988. It is 35 years after the events of Fred Schepisi's classic film, The Devil's Playground. Tom Allen (Simon Burke), now in his 40s and recently widowed, is a respected Sydney psychiatrist and father of two children. A practising Catholic, Tom accepts an offer by the Bishop of Sydney to become a counsellor of priests. During these sessions, he will uncover the greatest scandal to threaten the modern Church - the sexual abuse of minors by the clergy and the Church's attempts to cover this up. Tom's quest to bring one abusing priest to justice will push him to his limits, and reveal a side of Church power and official corruption he could never have imagined.
About Simon Burke
One of Australia's most accomplished, respected and versatile performers, Simon began his career at the age of 13 when he starred in Fred Schepisi's acclaimed feature film The Devil's Playground for which he won the AFI Award for Best Actor. Since then, he has enjoyed great success both in Australia and the UK in film, television, stage, concert appearances and cabaret. Simon also stars in Matchbox/NBC Universal's highly acclaimed drama series Devil's Playground in which he reprises the role of Tom Allen that he created as a boy in 1975 in the original film. He is also an executive producer of the project, which last week won the 2015 AACTA award for best telefeature or mini-series. Simon's many television credits include Hustle, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, The Alice, All Saints, Small Claims III, South Pacific, Brides of Christ, Scales of Justice, Water Rats, The One That Got Away, Heroes Mountain, After the Deluge, Grass Roots, Postcard Bandit, and his 25-year stint as one of the most popular presenters on ABC TV's Play School.
